On such albums as Primitive Plusand Beauty and the Beat, Boston native Edan Portnoy has used his tongue- in-cheek style, sharp flow and production suss to great effect. Instead of going on and on about how things were better back in the day, this bedraggled hip-hop scientist has updated the sound with colour psychedelia swirls and the funkiest and most bewitching of beats.
Edan's visit to these shores sees him plugging Echo Party, an album prompted by an invitation to see what he could do with the back-catalogue of such old-school rap labels as Magic, Chocolate Star and PP. What Edan has produced is a 30-minute, bugged-out trip through those early days, when hip-hop was getting its head together. He's accompanied on this trip by one-time Beastie Boys snapper Ricky Powell, who will be telling tales and showing snaps from those good old days.
