OutKast rapper André Benjamin – aka André 3000 – will spend six weeks in Ireland beginning later this month shooting the lead role in a film about Jimi Hendrix. The Irish Film Television Network (iftn.ie) reported that the Atlantan musician will portray Hendrix’s early career and the making of his debut album Are You Experienced in All By My Side. The film will be directed by John Ridley and co-produced by Irishman Tristan Orpen Lynch, whose company Subotica Films is based in Dublin. Shooting locations are said to include Bray – including the Bray Head Hotel – the disused John Player cigarette factory in Dublin, and various other spots around south Dublin.
It’s not the first time that the hip-hop star has flirted with the silver screen. Previous film roles include the musical outing Idlewild, as well as parts in comedy Semi-Pro and action movie Revolver.
