Telemann: The Autograph Scores

Collegium Musicum 90/Simon StandageChandos CHAN 0787

Only 18 autograph scores of Telemann's instrumental music have survived, a third of which feature on this new CD. The earliest music was composed before 1716, the latest in the final years of the octogenarian composer's life. It would be idle to pretend that it is all vintage Telemann, and aficionados of the prolific composer's work will enjoy the sleuthing that's involved in identifying which of his better-known pieces are echoed in the music of this collection. Horns feature prominently in the opening and closing works, an Overture in F and a Divertimento in E flat (which also features two flutes). There's a Concert en Ouverture with solo violin, and a Concerto in D for strings, both abounding with lively ideas, and an Overture in D, again with flutes, which has a horn-rich Fanfare appended to it. Simon Standage directs alert performances. url.ie/f1f2
