Simian Mobile Disco's retreat from the glare of the pop spotlight continues. After dalliances with the highlife on Temporary Pleasure, an album that came with a galaxy of guest vocalists, and James Ford's starry production assists (Arctic Monkeys, most famously), the duo have been moving further and further away from the limelight on recent releases. Like 2010's Delicacies compilation and its set of bumping electronic trump cards, Unpatterns is a no-frills, unadorned parade of house and techno cuts which groove along with occasional pep in their step. From the beady, euphoric house hallelujahs of Put Your Hands Together and I Waited For You to the deep, Berghain-influenced purr that powers Interference, it seems that Ford and James Shaw are redefining and redrafting their sound by going back to what worked best when they were first starting out. simianmobiledisco.co.uk
