Nine months after he ruined Taylor Swift's night at the VMAs, Kanye returns from exile with a new album, reportedly titled Good Ass Job. (As one commenter noted, it's a title that really could do with a hyphen somewhere.) Is West contrite? Is he chastened? Is he reformed? No, of course not. And we wouldn't want it any other way.

The retro-futurists return with a barnstorming second single from their Coconut album. Producer Tim Goldsworthy provides the beats, while Sam Windett contributes tortured, claustrophobic vocals reminiscent of a young Robert Smith, circa -Pornography.

Noble England Motivation Records ***

A whole plethora of singles this week celebrate Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad. Robbie Williams and Russell Brand assist in the umpteenth reworking of Three Lions. Terry Venables croons an old Elvis track from atop the Millenium Dome. But the pick of the bunch is from comedian Rik Mayall, whose channelling of Henry V (“Once more onto the pitch, dear friends”) will make the perfect ironic soundtrack to the team’s inevitable second round implosion.

KATY PERRY ft SNOOP DOGG

California Gurls Capitol **

The I Kissed a Girlsinger is billing this as her answer to Alicia Keys's Empire State of Mind. It's a comparison that really doesn't do Perry any favours. California Gurlsis vapid, unoriginal and riddled with lame clichés – and that's before Snoop Dogg pops up to rhyme "she's the one" with "squeeze her buns". Shocking.

KYLIE MINOGUE

All the Lovers Parlophone

Entertainment Weeklyreckons this single, from Kylie's forthcoming Aphrodite album, will soon reach "near ubiquity in gyms, gay clubs and clothing stores". In other words, I'll never have to hear it again. Fantastic!
