SQUAREHEAD PATRICK KELLEHER
Just a Tragedy/Attention to Detail
Popical Island ***
The first track is written by Patrick Kelleher and the flipside by Squarehead's Roy Duffy. Both are performed together by the two artists. Meanwhile, the accompanying Class Albumsmockumentary shows that Popical Island's approach to comedy is as endearingly ramshackle as its approach to music. This one-off double A-side is launched with a gig at Dublin's Grand Social tonight. youtube.com
CHRISTY MOORE
My Little Honda 50
Sony Ireland ****
On this cheery country’n’Irish ditty, Christy hops on his trustee Honda 50, hits the nitro and takes us on a ride all the way through the townlands of embarrassment, self-parody and cringing disbelief to a charming little hamlet called I’m 66 Years- Old and Do Not Give a Damn What You Think.
RUBY GOE
Get On It
Goe Music ****
“Be my Mr Savvy/He gonna leave me walk like Bambi.” The lyrics to this debut single from London electro/soul singer Ruby Goe are probably indecipherable to anyone over 25, but the tune certainly does get the old toe tapping.
WILL YOUNG
Come On
RCA ***
The second video from Will Young's Echoesalbum is essentially a remake of Robbie Williams's She's the One, except with dog shows instead of figure-skating. Young plays Dublin's Olympia on Halloween.
BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB
Lights Out
Words Gone Island ***
With their third studio album ( A Different Kind of Fix), Bombay Bicycle Club have positioned themselves as a sort of easy-listening Talking Heads. There's nothing much going on here, but all the same this is a tune and a half.
ED SHEERAN
Lego House
Warner *
Zane Lowe recently proclaimed Ed Sheeran's Lego Housethe "hottest record on the planet". The only logical explanation for that would be if Zane Lowe were broadcasting his show from the planet Neptune, where the average land temperature is -201 degrees. (I checked on Wikipedia!) Because this record is completely crap.
