ENRIQUE INGLESIAS ft LUDACRIS
Tonight I'm Fucking YouUniversal ***
“Please excuse me, I don’t mean to be rude/But tonight I’m fucking you.” I’ll be honest: I was 26 years old before it dawned on me that Nina Simone’s I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl wasn’t actually about having to endure chronic sugar shortages. The penny didn’t take nearly as long to drop with this effort. Enrique is talking about sex – I’m pretty sure about that.
THE STROKES
Under Cover of DarknessRough Trade ***
Only a 30-second preview of this song was available at the time of writing. But assuming that Under Cover of Darkness doesn’t morph into a Bohemian Rhapsody- esque rock opera, it’s safe to surmise that not a whole lot has changed in The Strokes’ universe since we last heard from them. An indescribably hip, gorgeous supermodel is harshing Julian’s vibe and, well, he’s having none of it.
LADYTRON
GhostsNettwerk ****
Liverpudlian electropop quartet Ladytron are one of the most underrated groups of the last decade. They release a Best Of 00-10 later this year.
CHRIS BROWN ft LIL’ WAYNE BUSTA RHYMES
Look at Me NowJive ****
The second single from Brown’s forthcoming F.A.M.E. (Forgiving All My Enemies) album sees Rihanna’s charming ex invite listeners to – how should I put this? – say hello to his little friend. The worst part is that the track is actually rather brilliant. Producer Diplo, meanwhile, who made his name working with MIA, is rumoured to be working on Beyoncé’s next album.
PARADE
LouderWarner ***
Parade are Emily, Lauren, Bianca, Sian and Jessica. The approach is very much Spice Girls circa Wannabe, which is to say that they’re cute, but not so cute that ordinary people will hate themselves. The hottest new girlband of 2011 and not a second too soon.
