THE ROLLING STONES ft MARY J BLIGE
Gimme Shelter (Live) ****
During dates on the Stones’ current 50 and Counting tour, Mick Jagger has been inviting female vocalists onstage to sing the spine-tingling part performed, on the original, by Merry Clayton. In London it was Florence Welch. In New York last weekend, it was Mary J Blige. If the tour makes it to Dublin, Shuffle predicts that our very own Mary Byrne will get the nod from Mick. Go on Mary, ya good thing!
WILL.I.AM ft BRITNEY SPEARS
Scream &Shout Interscope **
"When we walk into the club," sings Britney, in a weird English accent, "all eyes on us. All eyes on us." Most likely, Britney, because you've morphed into one of those beat-up Mob wives from Goodfellas, while Will.i.amis sporting a baseball hat crown and Mr T chains. Just a theory.
PINK
Try RCA ***
The second video from Pink’s The Truth About Love album
is inspired by Parisian street performance art. In it, she and her co-star, Broadway dancer Colt Prattes, have probably the most elegant violent altercation you will ever see. Hell, they even throw chairs at each other gracefully.
JOHNNY MARR
The Right Thing Right Warner ***
A quarter century after The Smiths brok up, Johnny Marr will release his debut solo album (The Messenger) in February. This single is an upbeat thumper, though, vocally, you’d have to say Johnny hasn’t exactly been hiding his light under a bushel all these years.
KE$HA
Die Young RCA ***
On the lead single from her Warrior album, Ke$ha sings about partying “like we’re gonna die young”. The video features lesbianism, Satanism and upside-down crosses. Throw in a dog pooping in your neighbour’s garden and that’s tomorrow’s edition of Liveline boxed off.
