There's a lot of drama on the debut album from Kyla La Grange and, for the most part, it's of the good variety. While it's quickly apparent that the Watford performer is operating on similar ley-lines to Florence Welch, Kate Bush and Tori Amos, La Grange has enough guile and guitars to ensure she's more than a mere understudy. She also has enough robust, hooky, shapely pop anthems, such as Heavy Stone and Walk Through Walls, to knock those comparisons to one side. It's La Grange's way with melodies (even within songs about goblins, vampires and other woodland creatures going bump in the night) that really makes her debut an item of interest, as she keeps things simple and to the point beneath the big-room rock frame. Occasional shades of overbearing melodrama and histrionics aside, Ashes works well as an introduction to an artist well prepped for some time in the limelight.
