It’s just possible you haven’t heard of Kimbra – if you happen to be one of the few who hasn’t seen the world-conquering video for Somebody That I Used to Know (wherein she duets, painted skin-to-skin, with the angular oddity that is Gotye). Vows, however, is Kimbra’s standalone solo debut offering. While it shows that the 21-year-old New Zealander is a trusty source of soul-inflected tunes, it also highlights the kind of flaws that surface when you have a glaring spotlight thrust upon you. She is already a major hit in her home territory (from gold to platinum to awards shortlists in no time at all), but there is a sense that the international deal she signed with a major label has arrived a little too soon for her still-developing skills. Album No 2, perhaps. kimbramusic. com
