Voyageurs were legendary frontier figures who travelled with the fur trade in early Canada. It's an appropriate title for this fourth album by highly rated Canadian singer and songwriter Kathleen Edwards. Voyageuris all about movement – from one relationship to another – change and self- discovery. Now 33, divorced and settled down with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon (who co-produces the album with her), Edwards has come a distance since 2003's Failerset her up as a roots diva, though she clearly fancied herself as a rock goddess (Going to Hell). The guitar is not as pervasive or abrasive here, and she sounds more AOR reflective, especially on Pink Champagneand For the Record, which closes the set on an epic note with vocals shared with Norah Jones. It's a strong collection, notwithstanding her nod to The Cranberries ( Change the Sheets), produced in a sweeping big sound tinged with regret. kathleenedwards. com
