A brand new Hendrix album? It's enough to make the most experienced guitarist's hands tremble. After the creative high of Electric Ladyland, Hendrix was on fire, and keen to write, produce and record new music, and when relations between him and Noel Redding broke down, he got his old buddy Billy Cox to step in. Valleys of Neptuneis not the long-lost follow-up to Ladyland, but it does fill the gap between his opus and his final recording sessions in 1970. The title track – a much sought-after treasure – is one of several originals here; the rest is filled out with covers (including an instrumental version of Sunshine of Your Love) and some reworked Hendrix classics ( Stone Free, Red House, Fire). There's a lot of lenghthy jamming, but also some incendiary guitar playing – for serious collectors, this is a great way to mark 40 years after his death. jimihendrix.com
