There are some brilliant ideas to be found throughout this debut album. Like many of their indie synth-rock peers in the age of new eclecticism, New York's Hooray for Earth take musical cues from all over the shop, with heavy doses and washes of psych-rock, dance grooves and radio-friendly pop in the mix. It's when they go for the unexpected that True Lovescomes into its own. The title track ripples with beeps and bass before the melody slays you, while Last Minute, Sameand Black Treesexhibit similarly deft knockout flashes and angles. While it all comes back to frontman Noel Heroux and the wall of sound he hears in his head, there's little doubt that Hooray for Earth have come to the boil at just the right time. hoorayforearth.net
