CAPTAIN MOONLIGHT

On the Lough

Reflect the Sun Records ***

Kilkenny’s Captain Moonlight is an eminent figure on the Irish hip-hop scene, having already released two albums’ worth of stinging indictments on the state of modern Ireland. Indeed, the image of a slain Celtic Tiger on the sleeve of the final instalment in his Agroculture series says it all about the rapper’s lyrical motivation. Sale of the Century denounces everything from supermodels to Eddie Hobbs, while several other tracks condemn the nation’s enduring obsession with money. Treading the middle ground between the comparative commercialism of Messiah J the Expert and the ferocity of Scary Éire, On the Lough cements Moonlight as a figure of both whimsy and authority, while his outspoken contemporary Jinx Lennon even guests on several tracks. Not a vital voice, perhaps, but a valuable one. www.myspace. com/captainmoonlightkilkenny
