Francesco Parrino (violin), Stefano Parrino (flute), Orchestra da Camera Stesichoros/Francesco Di Mauro Stradivarius STR 33840 ***
The opening of Giorgio Federico Ghedini's 1958
Sonata da Concertofor flute and orchestra sets the tone for this disc. It is individual, sensual, indulgent. Solo flute is joined by rumblings on bass drum before the orchestra breaks into fractured agitation, after which an excited flute reasserts itself. All kinds of early 20th-century references suggest themselves, but Ghedini proves loyal to his own infinitely distractible character. Evocations of nature abound in the
Concerto detto l'Alderina(1950) for flute and violin. In the
Violin Concerto detto Il belprato(1947) there's a sense of frolic that borders on the frivolous. The impression is of a composer, who has nothing to prove, doing as he pleases. Characterful solo contributions contrast with roughish orchestral playing.
