Torches Columbia***
Los Angeles band Foster the People's Pumped Up Kickswas the jam of summer 2010 for many and proof that there will always be a market for a sunny, mellow tune about a kid about to go postal with a six-shooter. The good news is that there's more where that comes from, and Torcheshas its fair share of hip, infectious hooks, meaty tunes and brilliantly upbeat moods. Combining the Passion Pit-like falsetto of frontman Mark Foster (who was originally championed by Dr Dre) and some serious playing chops in the musical engine-room, Torches finds its feet on excellent dance-able grooves like Houdiniand Call it What You Want. While there's nothing here to shoulder Pumped Up Kicksfrom its pole-position on the plinth, there's more than enough to keep Foster the People on this summer's playlist. See fosterthepeople.com
