Two Lights Not Broken,Self-released **

Steve O’Sullivan, aka Evil Uncle, pushes the musical DIY method to its limits: his last EP was distributed under the windscreen wipers of 5,000 cars at this year’s Electric Picnic, and his full-length debut was self-recorded piecemeal at various locations. Perhaps that explains why Two Lights Not Broken sounds fragmented and even unfinished in parts. Guitar and piano-based indie pop is the dominant genre, but O’Sullivan’s self-drawn parallels with Grandaddy and Jarvis Cocker are slightly lofty. Would either act write a track about a talking spider? Although many of the lyrics are presumably tongue-in-cheek, they mostly come across as simply silly. There are seeds of potential here, but, as well- meaning as these songs are in theory, there’s something that doesn’t quite work when they’re put into practice. See eviluncle.eu
