Fans of spacey drones and hypnotic synths may already be on nodding terms with sound scientist Alexis Georgopoulos, thanks to his In Lightdebut from a few years ago. For The Soft Wave,the New Yorker doesn't so much flip the script as add scope. What makes his work so enticing is the ease with which his subtle, soft, precise stylistic mingling works. Mixing and matching classical minimalism, warped Balearic tones, Eno ambitronica and Krautrock drones, Georgopoulos creates a wash of sound with both distinct cinematic appeal and some interesting pop textures. Tracks such as Catch Waveand the graceful F rom a Balcony Overlooking the Sea(where Georgopoulos' vocals provide a hint of his debt to Eno's Another Green World) indicate that his trip won't be ending any time soon.
