With Reservation, you can gauge how much Angel Haze has progressed in so little time. The 20-year-old rapper worked out her stances, cast out her demons and perfected her craft on last year’s Altered Ego and King mix-tapes. As a result there are few missteps on Reservation, with Haze’s rhymes taking their direction from her strict religious upbringing, Native American background, transient childhood, and the heartache caused by past (and perhaps even present) girlfriends. She has a brilliant facility for killer beats, and New York (which recycles Gil Scott-Heron’s New York Is Killing Me), Werkin’ Girls and Drop It all come with blistering, infectious hooks.
But often there’s no need for anything to go with her words, for example on such tracks as Smiles N Hearts and Sufferings First. Watch her soar.
