Anyone who’s been keeping a tally of the American orchestras that have appeared at the National Concert Hall can add another to the list when the Philadelphia Orchestra makes its debut there on Monday. The Philadelphians’ appearance will mean that only one of the so-called Big Five US orchestras, the Boston Symphony, has yet to play at the NCH.

The Philadelphia Orchestra is setting out on its current European tour at a time of considerable stress, with Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings underway.

Harmony still prevails on a musical level, though, and chief conductor Charles Dutoit offers Dubliners an attractive programme of Sibelius ( Finlandia), Tchaikovsky (the Violin Concerto with Janine Jansen), Rachmaninov (the Symphonic Dances, written for and dedicated to the orchestra, which also recorded it with Rachmaninov conducting), and Ravel ( La valse).
