Oh, he's that, all right. The man born in Bristol almost 43 years ago as Adrian Thaws has, over the past two decades, assured us of a certain amount of sonic mischief and misadventure, and if his latest album, Mixed Race, is anything to go by, the tricks aren't going to stop anytime soon. But it was always the way: as a teenager he hung around the Bristol sound system crew, Wild Bunch, which morphed into Massive Attack.

Moving on from MA, Tricky linked up with Martina Topley-Bird and secured her unique vocal services for his 1995 debut album, Maxinquaye(a record that seemed, at one mind- blowing point, the future of British hip-hop). He has gone on to release albums that, while rarely reaching the highs of his debut, have gone on to secure a place in the pantheon of hybrid dance/ hip-hop/dub/rough'n'ready ambient. Tricky? Oh, he's that, all right!
