The Danes are coming. While most pop weather-vanes have long since swivelled north towards Sweden and Norway, some are now also pointing in the direction of Denmark.

Despite many of Denmark’s new indie lights suffering from the curse of the music school – as seen by too many bands with six or more members and too much emphasis on technique over talent – there are some acts who join the bold and brassy Alphabeat in bucking that trend.

From Aarhus, Maria Timm makes cheeky, irresistibly merry twisty pop that you can imagine many people hip-hip-hurrahing about in 2010. Her debut album The Planhas plenty of those finger-snapping, forward-facing, pop tunes that can set both dancefloors and radios alight.

Live, as seen by her gig at Hamburg’s Reeperbahn fest of new international music last month, the story gets even better as Timm and her jaunty band push all the right buttons again and again and again.

Up to now, Timm's album has received a release and a promotional push only at home in Denmark. Any label, though, searching for a sound that is two parts Lykke Li to two parts Ladyhawke might want to make the acquaintance Timm and The Planbefore someone else snaps her up.
