Curated by Cliodhna Shaffrey, Flicks – The Cinematic in Artdraws on a rich vein of material. "There has," as Shaffrey says, "always been a dynamic relationship between cinema and art – art influencing cinema and cinema impacting immensely on the visual image." Jennifer Brady's We've Still Got a Few Minutes Left(above) inventively reworks a scene from Brief Encounter. Martin Healy looks at a trio of sinister youngsters from occult thrillers. Christian Marclay's Telephones, which dates from 1995, is a wonderfully witty patchwork of scenes featuring telephones drawn from many movies. Suky Best and Rory Hamilton's animation uses the iconic cinematic figure of the cowboy. There's a sofa moment from Tom Cruise endlessly prolonged in Paul Pfeiffer's looped video. Nicolas Jasmin also loops a clip, from a 1970s film by Alain Corneau. Tracey Moffatt and Gary Hillberg consider revolution as depicted onscreen. For Bea McMahon, Wonderwomanbecomes a means of exploring quantum theory, and J Tobias Anderson cuts and pastes a wide range of source imagery in his three pieces.
