Mann takes the story of John Dillinger (suave Depp), America’s slickest gangster, and turns it into

a deeply peculiar but endlessly fascinating art film. Yes, the character development is slight and the HD photography tends towards ugliness. But the director's gift for maintaining austere mood and for marshalling violence allows it to shine as the purest of pure cinema. DONALD CLARKE

Raimi returns to his horror movie roots in this picture of a bank official (Lohman) cursed when she refuses a loan extension to an elderly woman facing eviction. Raimi orchestrates the deliriously over-the-top set-pieces with evident relish and injects them with dark tongue-in-cheek humour. MICHAEL DWYER
