COCONOT
Cosa Astral
Bcore★★★

Cosa Astralshould really come with a sticker saying "if you like El Guincho, you'll dig this", because Pablo Diaz-Reixa – the Catalonian electronic mischief-maker known as El Guincho – is one-third of the Coconot set-up and had recorded with them before his solo career blew up last year. His success with the much-admired Alegranza!album should ensure an increased audience for the outfit's second album of trippy, exotic head-sounds. Interestingly, given how many Panda Bear comparisons El Guincho has attracted, Coconot often resemble a more sun-dappled Animal Collective. These psychedelic grooves, however, come with considerable elan, so Coconot's freakouts are a lot more horizontal and laid-back, which makes for an album that hazily and happily meanders its way through a maze of leftfield pop twists and turns from Krautrock to Tropicalia. www.myspace.com/coconot
