It seems like only yesterday that we were discussing Forbesmagazine's list of the highest earning stars in Hollywood. The publication's chart for male performers emerged this week and it revealed that, despite having a quiet year in 2011, Leonardo DiCaprio is currently pulling in the largest wad, with an annual income of $75 million.
Last year DiCaprio had a big hit with Inceptionand a modest one with Shutter Island. It remains to be seen if his durable pulling power can bring mass audiences to J Edgar, Clint Eastwood's upcoming study of J Edgar Hoover.
DiCaprio replaces Johnny (Rango) Depp at the top, but the handsome beatnik still sits firmly in the No 2 spot with earnings of $50 million. The top five is rounded out by Adam Sandler, Will Smith and Tom Hanks.
The chart does throw up some surprises. What's Tim Allen done to retain a place in the top 10? Well, he was "in" Toy Story 3 –the biggest film of last year – but we didn't even get to see his bleeding face. Jim Carrey and Tom Cruise, despite being well best their prime, all make the higher reaches of the list. Indeed, it seems like the only star under 40 to secure a top 10 spot is DiCaprio himself.
Sure enough, a glance at last year's worldwide chart reveals that the closest thing to a hit starring recognisable youth idols was The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Somebody wants to put some money the way of wee Rob Pattinson and wan Kristen Stewart.
