Clausen painting may fetch £12,000

IN CORK, Lynes and Lynes will hold its first auction of the year at the Arbutus Lodge, Montenotte, on Tuesday, February 27th. Around 350 lots will be sold in an evening session, including some interesting pictures.

A painting by George Clausen, ARA, called Sharing his Meal, has been in a private collection for the last 70 years. Denis Lynes estimates that it will fetch £10,000-£12,000.

A Lavery portrait of John T. Laing could fetch £5,000-£8,000, while a Frank Egginton watercolour of a west of Ireland scene has a top estimate of £3,000.

A rather grim sounding and large 18th oil painting, Cleansing of the Lepers, is estimated at £2,000-£3,000.

The sale will also have a good selection of Georgian and Victorian furniture, including a Regency rosewood table (estimate, £1,500-£2,000); a Georgian, flame mahogany writing bureau (£1,200-£1,500); and a fine set of eight Chippendale style dining chairs - six chairs and two carvers - are estimated at £3,000-£4,000.

Viewing is on Tuesday, from 11 a.m., and on the morning of the auction.
