Run it up the flagpole

When a letter-writer suggested we needed a new Irish flag that sports fans from North and South could fly with pride, we asked some creative folk to dream one up. Here’s what they came up with

AGENCY: FIRE IMC, BELFAST

“The design we created suggests an amalgamation of North and South, hence the star of the Ulster flag coming down from the North and joining with the tricolour to symbolise joining together. The white sharp edge of the star cutting through the colours of the Republic creates this bolt of fusion and the coming together as a nation.”

Blanaid Hennessy says: “We were going to go down the road of political correctness, peace and unity, but everything we tried seemed too earnest or insufficient. So, putting tongue firmly in cheek, we decided to create a flag featuring a stag wearing the symbols of each province as jewellery, body art and, eh, hands.”

“When you use all the colours from both flags, including white, it looks a little like a rainbow. The colours are mixed on purpose, rather than keeping the red and blue together or the green and orange together, in order to avoid it looking like any existing flag. Message: everyone combined makes this island a more colourful place to live.”
