Meanwhile, younger executives in the US may have the high motivation and educational skills they need, but they are falling down when it comes to table manners. So much so that some businesses have started sending their young turks to etiquette class before allowing them out with clients on a power lunch.

"People like to do big business with people they like," says Ms Cynthia Lett, a table manners and etiquette coach in Maryland. "A client isn't going to be impressed if the company manager drinks out of the finger bowl at dinner."

Now university career guidance officers are incorporating manners into their courses for graduates. Penn State has even renovated an 18thcentury mansion on its campus so professors could hold lectures and discussions during formal dinners. Each lecture there includes 10 minutes of training on dining etiquette.
