Tellabs, the Limerick-based technology company, has acquired US company Salix technologies in an all-stock deal valued at around $300 million (€309 million).

Salix will form part of Tellabs' ANS (Adaptive Network Solutions) division which specialises in developing technologies to enable telecommunications operators to deliver traditional telephony services over a broadband infrastructure.

Vice-president and managing director, Mr Pat Shanahan, said that Salix's research centre in Maryland will add to Tellab's other centres in Illinois, Massachusetts and Maryland in the US.

With the addition of Salix's ETX5000 Enhanced Telephony Exchange, Tellabs said it will be able to facilitate service providers in building next-generation networks based on IP and ATM. Salix's technology allows service providers to deliver next generation voice, fax and data services quickly and expand their networks without the normal costs usually associated with such transactions.
