Huawei opens STEM scholarship programme for Irish students

Students can learn Mandarin, calligraphy and gain an insight into modern Chinese businesses

Huawei Ireland has unveiled a new €250,000 scholarship programme aimed at supporting third level students in Irish science, technology, engineering and maths courses.

The funding is part of Huawei’s “Seeds for the Future” initiative, a programme that aims to develop understanding of the ICT industry. Fifty bursaries of €5,000 each will be provided to the top-performing STEM students who take part in the Seeds for the Future programme.

Experiences

Although the Seeds for the Future programme has been running since 2015, the Irish €250,000 scholarship programme is the first Huawei has run in Western Europe.

Students who take part in the 2021 programme will have access to virtual tours of Huawei’s campuses, alongside Chinese culture experiences like tours of famous cities, learning Mandarin, calligraphy and an insight into modern Chinese businesses.

The programme includes a mixture of live-streamed courses, covering expert question and answer sessions, Huawei’s “tech4good” initiative and cultural insights; and pre-recorded sessions on developments in smart cities, artificial intelligence , cloud computing, 5G and the Internet of Things.

Applications

The programme is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students studying in Ireland. Applications are open until October 14th, with the programme taking place between October 18th and 26th.

Scholarships will then be awarded to those who successfully complete the Seeds for the Future programme.

“Huawei is committed to investing in Ireland’s future ICT workforce and we see this scholarship programme as another way to help these students enhance their capabilities as they continue their STEM studies,” said Luke McDonnell, senior communications manager, Huawei Ireland. “Our Seeds for the Future programme has proven very successful and we look forward to welcoming more students to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this year.”
