New car numbers treble

The number of new cars licensed in December 1997 was treble the number licensed in the same month of 1996, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office. There were 6,637 cars registered last December compared to 1,946 the year before. December was the last month in which buyers were able to avail of the highly-successful scrappage scheme.
