German shares held their gains after healthy employment figures from the US and a firmer Wall Street bolstered the market. This was fortunate as there was little corporate news about. Traders said players were reluctant to take positions ahead of the weekend.

The Paris market closed above 4,000 for the first time since Tuesday's 204-point swing, but brokers said investor caution could be highlighted by concerns following bomb blasts on US embassies.

Italian stocks awoke from their Friday slumber to stage a late sprint which helped to extend earlier gains. Shares which performed well early on strengthened further like Compart and insurer Fondiria.
