A busy quarter for bond underwriting helped Lehman Brothers to post a 14 per cent increase in second quarter earnings yesterday. The US investment bank earned $430 million during the quarter, its third-best performance and easily exceeding analysts' expectations.

Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs said earnings fell 18 per cent from the previous year as the downturn in equity markets hurt its mergers and acquisition advisory and equity underwriting activities.
