Up to 40 per cent of retail outlets could vanish if home shopping captures the predicted 15 per cent of the retail market, according to a new survey published by JBA Holdings. To counter the threat, improvements in the supply chain relationship are being viewed as the way forward for the retail industry. Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) is a new strategy to ensure efficient replenishment, promotion and introduction of shop-based stocks. Central to its success is the adoption of electronic data interchange (EDI) linking suppliers, distributors and retailers in the food industry. The findings of the global survey were presented at a seminar entitled "Challenges for the Irish Food Sector in the 21st Century". Delivering the results, Mr Pat Chambers, managing director, JBA Ireland, said: "It is imperative if the retail and food industry in Ireland is to achieve closer integration with customers and suppliers, that it continues to bring innovative products to the market, and improves product quality. It has been estimated that it can enhance productivity levels by up to 7 per cent."
