CORK RECEIVED a welcome jobs boost yesterday when US biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences announced it is to establish a financial services operation that will create 30 new jobs over the next two years.
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Coughlan welcomed the announcement by Gilead that it is to expand its workforce at Carrigtwohill in east Cork from 125 to 155 through the establishment of the financial operations centre.
“Gilead Sciences is one of the leading biotechnology companies in the world and its decision . . . is welcome news for the whole southwest region,” said Ms Coughlan.
Gilead Sciences general manager in Ireland Julie O’Neill said the centre in Cork will service Gilead’s existing markets in Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Benelux and the Nordic countries.
Gilead Sciences established its operation in Cork in 2007 following the acquisition of the Nycomed manufacturing facility. Supported by IDA Ireland, the company has continued to invest in its Cork operations.
