Peter Sutherland to retire as Goldman Sachs chairman

Peter Sutherland is to retire as chairman of Goldman Sachs International, after 20 years in the role.

The former attorney general is due to retire at the end of June, in order to devote more time to his role as the special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Migration and Development.

It is understood a memo was sent to all staff today informing them of the news.

The memo said he will continue to provide strategic advice to Goldman Sachs on global business development opportunities.

Mr Sutherland first joined Goldman Sachs as an international advisor in 1990. He assumed the role of chairman in 1995.

He previously served as director general of the World Trade Organisation and chairman of BP. He also served as chairman of the London School of Economics from 2008 to January 2015.
