Although there are a number of corporate events coming up in the week ahead, attention will focus on economic data. At home, there is the publication of figures for Exchequer borrowing over the first half of the year tomorrow and also unemployment data on Friday.
Both are likely to give little comfort to those who fear the economy is overheating.
Abroad, the ECB meets again on interest rates on Thursday, although after the 50-basis point rise last month, no further move is expected. Of interest elsewhere will be employment data from the US, which may give further strength to the belief that the US economy is heading for a soft landing.
