The Government has sanctioned the transfer of 5 per cent of the ESB to its staff.

It is thought the shares could be worth about £8,000 (€10,158) to each of the 9,000 people who will benefit from the scheme. The ESB's net asset value was £1.4 billion in its latest annual report, suggesting the 5 per cent tranche is worth about £70 million.
