Buyers returned to the New York stock market yesterday, lifting the Nasdaq composite index to its first gain since last Tuesday as they sought bargains among blue-chip technology names.
The Nasdaq composite rose 106.03 points to close at 3,270.58. Earlier in the day, the Nasdaq had been down as much as 121 points. The Standard and Poor's 500 rose 25.19 to 1,399.05.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 10-to-9 margin on the New York Stock Exchange, with 1,500 down, 1,426 up and 500 unchanged.
NYSE volume totalled 1.13 billion shares, against 862.25 million in the previous session.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies slipped 0.02 to 458.99.
The Dow Jones industrial average also bounced back from early declines and finished up 113.08 at 10,535.35.
