THE Dow Jones industrials came back from a 50 point deficit to finish slightly higher today, closing 6.28 points up at 5894.74. But broad market indices finished lower and market analysts noted that volume was very light and ruled by technical factors. Indeed, the broader market was weaker in the morning and failed to recover.
Technology stocks were broadly lower. Oil stocks fell with the price of oil, after Turkey's foreign minister urged that Iraq be permitted to quickly resume oil sales.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by five to three on the New York Stock Exchange. The NYSE's composite index fell 0.26 to 365.51, and the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index declined 0.54 to 686.48. The Nasdaq composite index fell 7.22 to 1212.47, and the American Stock Exchange's market value index dropped 1.58 to 563.62.
