The airline industry's worst-ever slump will result in a further 1,000 layoffs at Boeing Company aircraft factories and the loss of 900 flight attendant jobs at US Airways, it emerged yesterday.

Boeing planned to issue layoff notices to 1,060 people as part of continuing staffing cuts because of the long slump since the September 11th terrorist attacks.

About 1,030 redundancy notices will be issued to workers in the Puget Sound region in the US where Boeing has two commercial jet factories.

Including these job losses, Boeing will have cut 32,300 jobs since the terrorist attacks and the firm said it plans to have slashed 35,000 jobs by the end of the year.
