The DFCC awards its prizes at JDIFF
The representatives of the Dublin Film Critics Circle have deliberated, cogitated and digested.
As has become the habit over the past five years, a panel drawn from the Dublin Film Critics Circle gathered at the Church Bar in Jervis Street to award prizes for the best films in the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival. There we are above. Gavin Burke, to the extreme left, introduced, from left to right: David O’Mahony, Brogen Hayes, Donald Clarke (blissfully obscured), Tara Brady, Rory Cashin, Nicola Timmins and Daniel Anderson. Paul Whittington, was not able to make it, but also contributed to the voting.
The prize for best film went to a picture that sadly has yet to receive distribution in these territories: Anna Odell’s The Reunion (Återträffen). The Michael Dwyer Discovery Award, named for this paper’s late film correspondent, went the way of Donal Foreman for his first-class, off-centre comic-drama Out of Here. That film is also awaiting a distribution deal. We shall be lobbying on Donal’s behalf as the months progress. Best Irish film went to Brendan Muldowney’s Love Eternal.
Commenting on the awards, our own Tara Brady, Dublin Film Critics Circle President, said: “It’s been another exceptional year for films at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival and it’s been an absolute privilege for everyone on the jury to see them. The Dublin Film Critics Circle is so very proud of our continuing association with the festival. We’ll be back. Try and stop us.”
Jack O’Connell, who won best actor for the prison drama Starred Up, sent a note confirming that the award would allow him a fine evening at his local Irish centre in Derby. Mr Foreman, visiting from Brooklyn, was there to accept his gong in person. Jameson was swilled, eyes were wiped and we all looked merrily forward to next year. Here is the full list of prizes:
