New Music – Ray BLK, Freda James, Cairobi
New music to cheer from London and Brooklyn
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips with us or check out all past New Music selections here.
South London Ray BLK first hit our radar when she teamed up with Stormzy for the ace “My Hood” earlier this year. Her other tracks, as seen on new mini-album “Durt”, are just as noteworthy, showcasing a singer with a lovely, throwback soulful r’n'b voice and a fine handle on the kind of songs which work best with that particular asset.
From Brooklyn, Freda James shows off some impressively lush vocal chops on her debut track “Pushing You Away”. It’s a track full of sunnysideup disco-pop vibes from producers Dave Weingarten and Noah Breakfast, but James’ vocals and lyrical pow-wow are what really strike you as worth investitaging further. One for the 2017 list.
“Lupo” is the track which turned our head in the direction of these wide-eyed London-based psych explorers. It’s a slow-burning, infectious draw of a tune from the band featuring dudes from Italy, Mexico and France who’ve oviously got some classy cuts in their record collection. Debut album due sometime soon by all accounts.
