New Music – Gang Of Youths, Chloe Leone, Two Another
New music to check out from Sydney, Birmingham and London
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
Based in Sydney, Gang of Youths have heard the big music and they’re determined that you’re going to hear it too. While their debut album “The Positions” is a serious proposition, it’s this gang’s thrilling, ferocious, pulsating live show which really kicks out the jams. There are big shadows of The Waterboys, The Walkmen, Arcade Fire and Bruce Springsteen on this sound, but they’ve also got some distinctive moxie of their own on songs like “Restraint & Release” and “Strange Diseases”.
The “Domesticated” EP is a heck of an introduction to the new Birmingham singer from the Black Butter camp. There’s a lovely soulful purr to her voice and she’s got a way of adding oomph and haze to those finessed songs about inner city life and strife which reminds you of old-school icons like Minnie Ripperton and Erykah Badu.
There’s a lot to dig and enjoy on the London duo’s three-track debut EP. Spinning the kind of blissful slo-mo blue-of-the-night soul on a Sweetback tip, their tracks like “Shouldn’t Have Done That” come with a sparse, streamlined beauty and poise. One to watch for future nocturnal pop wig-outs.
