Phife Dawg RIP
A Tribe Called Quest founding member dies at the age of 45
Very sad news to hear about the death of Malik Taylor AKA Phife Dawg who co-founded A Tribe Called Quest with his schoolfriends Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad back in 1985. The man who called himself the Funky Diabetic and the Five Foot Assassin played a big part in the group’s success, adding heft, swagger and agile rhymes to the group’s standout albums like “The Low End Theory” (a landmark when it came to the mix of jazz and hip-hop and rightly considered one of the best hip-hop releases of all time) and “People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm”. At the time of his death, he was working on a solo record called “Muttymorphosis”. Phife Dawg had been struggling with diabtetes for many years and received a kidney transplant from his wife in 2008 after suffering renal failure.
