New Music – Retiree, Media Jeweler, Saint Sister
New sounds from Sydney, Orange County and Dublin (via Belfast and Derry)
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
“Heard You’re Doing Well” is a summertime jam and a half, a great intoxicating slice of tropical rhythm and laidback pop groove from the Sydney band fast making a serious noise for themselves. It’s one of the downtempo beauts on their new “This Place” EP for Rhythm Section International. One for your weekend playlist.
Organge County experimentalists Media Jeweler release their “$99 R/T Hawaii” album next month and can expect to grab a lot of ink, type and attention for it if opening salvo “Autopilot” is a good gauge of proceedings. An instrumental track with copious amounts of scope, scale and energy, “Autopilot” sounds like the work of a band comfortable enough to burn off in many different directions without ever losing sense of where exactly they’re heading.
A Dublin-based duo with roots in Belfast and Derry, vocalist Morgan MacIntyre and harpist Gemma Doherty were formerly known as O Sister when they supported San Fermin, Will Butler, Spies and others. Theirs is a strong, resonant, magnetic sound, with a clear folk influence in the wash, but one where the spooky, full-bodied songs they’re digging out also come with a lot of melodic gumption. Video below of the band as O Sister from earlier in the year and three tracks streaming here as well
