New Music – Animaux, Mylko, Bad Sea
New acts for you to check out from Melbourne, Mexico and Dublin
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
Another week, another smashing Australian band for you to meet. From Melbourne, Animaux’s story begins with a bunch of kids coming together in their school brass band. A few years on with school out for good, they’ve found their feet and their sound. Recent release “Come On Over” sounds divine in this or any other weather, a track full of magnetic melodic appeal and some super-sussed pop and funk dabs and slaps. They really have it going on.
Two dudes from Mexico City, Mylko make music full of tender moodswings, broody soundscapes and some sweet melodies. Both drummers, Mlyko met in school about 15 years ago, gathered steam about five years ago when they began composing music for TV shows and ads and are set to enter a new phase with the release of the “Contrast” album later this year. From that record, “Animal” is a track which makes you want to dig deeper into what Mylko are doing.
Dublin duo Ciara Thompson and Alan Pharrell are Bad Sea, an outfit specialising in dark torch songs, blue-of-the-night grace notes and music for gazing out the window with a pensive look on your gob. Their recordings to date display some promising ideas and “Comes to Blood” below is a good example of the potential they have, with Thompson’s lonesome, plaintive holler working very well against a sparse, spooky backdrop.
