New Music – Billie Black, PYCO, East Of Here
New sounds from London, Sweden and Sydney
Every week, we highlight a couple of new acts from around the globe who’ve caught our attention. Please feel free to share tips below or check out all past New Music selections here.
London newcomer Billie Black is set to make a strong impression in the coming months with tracks like “Going Under” and her new “Teach Me” EP. A perfect showcase for her evocative vocals, the track’s shuffling, sleek, new-school swagger comes with a real futuristic soul veneer. One to watch as she develops into something special.
Hands up who’s in the market for a new girl band? As any observer of music business comings and goings knows only too well, getting a girl band (or a boy band) off the ground is no mean feat. It helps if, like Swedish newcomers PYCO, the act comes with a killer tune. In this case, “Revolution” will stick in your ears and noggins for hours after you hear it. Here’s hoping that Daniella, Rebeca, Emilia and Nathalie and their handlers have similar fare to come.
From Sydney, East of Here pairs Joel Spiteri and Mike Holm, two musicians who’ve found some wonderful sounds to work with in that productive Venn diagram between electronic beats, melancholic hooks and bittersweet acoustics. Sparse and atmospheric, “Heartbeat” is a song full of haunting splendour.
