Is the world about to get another surprise Beyonce album?
Whether it turns out to be true or false, speculation about a new Beyonce album shows her uncanny ability to make headlines
All it takes is one strategically – or carelessly – leaked image and the Beyonce bandwagon is off and running. A photo started doing the rounds yesterday purporting to be a communication between various members of Team Bey with a track listing for an album due next week called “Beyonce – Self Titled – Volume 2″. The follow-up to last year’s surprise album (which really was a surprise) will, if this leak is to be believed, contain collabs with the likes of her hubby Jay Z, Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her kid Blue Ivy.
Regardless of whether this is an actual leak – you can imagine heads will roll somewhere in the Beyonce universe over this if it’s true (obviously her team are not on the same level as the Sinn Fein parliamentary party when it comes to keeping secrets) – or a prank by some Photoshop-friendly hoaxer with way too much time on their hand, there is no doubting the ability of the pop singer to generate headlines. It’s proof that superstars really are in a league of their own when it comes to managing and manipulating the new media levers. A strategic leak here, a few choice words there and you’ve got the sort of campaign money could not buy.
Last year’s surprise album from Beyonce was genuinely exciting for a few reasons. First of all, the album was actually decent, which always comes as a surprise on these occasions. Secondly, Beyonce and her minions managed to keep the whole thing under wraps for long enough to ensure it was a genuine surprise. And thirdly, it sold like hotcakes. You can understand why there’s a clamour around this rumour as the music industry limbers up for its most lucrative period of the year.
All will be revealed in time. Perhaps we’ve seen the first instance of the pop music industry strategic leak to prevent the leak about leak – or even the leak to ensure the new surprise album is not simply a rehash of last year’s surprise album camapign.
